New Delhi: The Hidden Dangers of Skincare Routines and Skin Cancer

Skin cancer is a type of cancer that originates from the skin. This type of cancer is largely caused by the damage to the skin cells caused by the ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun.

  • Exposure to UV rays from the sun
  • Family history of skin cancer
  • Weak immune system

These factors contribute to the risk of skin cancer. There is a growing concern that skincare routines, particularly those involving the use of beauty products, may contribute to the risk of skin cancer. Many dermatologists have been questioned about whether using skincare products such as serums, sunscreens, and other beauty products can lead to skin cancer.

Ingredients in Skincare Products Chemical Substances Health Risks
Preservatives such as parabens May lead to hormone-related cancers such as breast cancer High levels of parabens have been linked to breast cancer
Benzene May lead to leukaemia and other diseases Benzene is a known carcinogen

Some skincare products may also contain other substances that can lead to other health issues. According to Dr Asmita Dhekne Chebbi, MBBS, MD Dermatology, Apollo Spectra Hospital, Bangalore, “The current generation is highly devoted to daily skincare routines and uses multiple skincare or beauty products due to the influence of international skincare products, specifically flawless glass skin that the Korean population promotes.”

“The concern is that these skincare routines may contribute to the risk of skin cancer. Many dermatologists have encouraged individuals to use sunscreen, serums, and other beauty products to prevent skin cancer. These beauty products contain chemicals that help in preventing the disease; they protect individuals from UV radiation.”

However, there is no conclusive evidence to prove that skincare routines contribute to skin cancer. The International Journal of Dermatology published a study in 2018 that found no evidence of a link between skincare routines and skin cancer.

  • Using sunscreens with SPF 30 or above
  • Using skincare products that are produced internationally

Not using these products can increase the risk of skin cancer. Despite the lack of evidence, individuals are still raising concerns about whether the daily use of skincare products can lead to other long-term health issues. Some of the ingredients used in skincare products can raise health-related concerns.
There are many skincare products that contain ingredients that can lead to other health issues, such as breast cancer and leukaemia. Some skincare products may not be suitable for Indian skin.
A well-known skincare product originally made in the US contains preservatives such as parabens, which can put hormones at risk, leading to hormone-related cancers such as breast cancer. The Indian version of the product is made without preservatives.

Important Note:
Always consult a doctor or a dietician before starting any skincare programme or making any changes to your diet.

There are many skincare products available in the market that are safe and healthy. Being informed about the ingredients used in these products can reduce the risk of putting one’s health at risk.

  1. Look for products that are labeled as “hypoallergenic” or “fragrance-free.”
  2. Choose products that are made with natural ingredients.
  3. Read the ingredient labels carefully.

By being informed and choosing healthier skincare options, individuals can reduce the risk of skin cancer and other health issues.
