Capitalism killed the clean girl

Artistic representation for Capitalism killed the clean girl

For the past month, my legs have been breaking out in a rash. After a visit to two different allergists and a dozen inaccurate self-diagnoses courtesy of WebMD, I settled on the conclusion that my skin’s irritation was likely the result of my body lotion. So, a few days ago I set out on a shopping trip to search for a lotion that would hopefully prove less problematic. Walking into any pharmacy or beauty supply store is a dizzying experience. As I entered my local CVS and marched toward the cosmetics section, I was instantly overwhelmed. I was greeted with crowded shelves, each one brimming with hundreds of brightly-colored bottles and products. All of them seemed to compete for my attention, with many advertising outlandish health claims. Some of the labels claimed to firm skin, while others promised to lock in more moisture. Others pledged clean ingredients and minimal use of chemicals, assuring consumers that they were free of PFAS and Phthalates, despite the fact that I had no idea what either of these things were. One lotion even promised luxury benefits due to its use of goat milk. Suddenly, my quick trip to CVS turned into a deep-dive on Google to figure out what PFAS are and if a body lotion could truly counteract the natural aging process.

They need to be aware of the ingredients in their products and make informed choices.

The Rise of Clean Beauty

A Growing Concern

The clean beauty movement has been gaining momentum over the past decade. This shift in consumer behavior is driven by a growing awareness of the impact of personal care products on our health and the environment. The movement is not just about avoiding harsh chemicals; it’s about creating a more sustainable and holistic approach to beauty. The use of natural ingredients, such as essential oils and plant extracts, is on the rise. Consumers are increasingly seeking out products that are free from synthetic fragrances, dyes, and preservatives. The demand for eco-friendly packaging and sustainable sourcing is also on the rise.

The Problem with Traditional Beauty Products

Traditional beauty products often contain a cocktail of harsh chemicals that can have negative effects on our health and the environment. Some of the most common culprits include:

  • Parabens, which have been linked to hormone disruption and breast cancer. Phthalates, which have been linked to reproductive issues and birth defects. Synthetic fragrances, which can cause skin irritation and allergic reactions.

This phenomenon is not limited to the affluent; it has become a mainstream phenomenon, with many people seeking out high-end wellness experiences as a way to improve their overall health and wellbeing.
