The colour of your skin depends upon a pigment called melanin, which is produced by cells called melanocytes. When you get exposed to the sun, these melanocytes produce extra melanin to protect the deeper layers of your skin from getting damaged by the harmful UV rays.

This leads to an uneven production of melanin and hence to these pigmented spots. These spots can be very light brown or dark brown in colour and can occur anywhere on your body, but most commonly on areas like face, back, chest and hands.

Skin pigmentation is not a disease and it is more of a cosmetic concern. However, there are many effective treatments that can help you get rid of these ugly looking spots.

Skin pigmentation can occur due to various other reasons such as hormonal imbalance and using certain drugs like steroids and birth control pills etc.
